The ICA office will close for Christmas on Monday 23rd December at 2pm and will re-open on 2nd January 2020 at 10.00am.

Island Community Action would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and say a huge thank you to all our amazing volunteers, wonderful clients, partners and supporters during 2019. 

To help celebrate, the ICA Crooners will be singing festive songs at Tesco’s Easton on the 11th December. 

PORTLAND LOTTERY DRAW – Next draw on 14th December. £1 a ticket. Available from the ICA office and Cards ‘n’ Celebrations, Easton.

FREE OVER 50’s BENEFIT ADVICE SURGERY – Next Age UK Benefits Advice Surgery is on Tuesday 11th December. One-to-one appointments available. Call ICA on 823789 to book.

FREE PENGILLYS SOLICITORS LEGAL ADVICE CLINIC – Next clinic is on Wednesday 18th December. Call ICA on 823789 to an appointment.

PORTLAND FOOD BANK VOUCHERS – ICA holds Portland Food Bank vouchers. They can be collected from the ICA office between 10am-2pm, Monday to Friday.

PRIZE BINGO – Come along to the St George’s Centre, Reforne for a fun afternoon of Christmas Bingo on the 20th December. Doors open 1.15pm. Eyes down 2pm. Great prizes. Everyone welcome. 

THE MAN SHED – An informal and welcoming space for men aged 18+ to share and learn new skills, socialise and work on individual and/or community-based DIY, woodworking and furniture restoration projects. Open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

THE WOMEN’S SHED – Are you 18+ with an interest in basic DIY, woodworking or furniture refurbishment? Let the Women’s Shed team help get you started. Open Thursdays and Fridays.

NB: Friday am is a shared space for both men and women. Friday pm is men only.

The Shed is based at 41 Chiswell (next to the Ocean Bay Chinese take away). Opening hours are Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 10am-12.30pm and 1.30-4pm. £15 life membership + £5 per 2.5hr session.  Attend the am or pm sessions, or both.

CHESIL ART (CHAT) – Every Tuesday, 1.30-3.30pm. The group meets at St. John’s Hall, Ventnor Road, Fortuneswell.  Members can enjoy painting or sketching alongside others in a friendly and welcoming environment, using a range of materials. Suitable for beginners upwards. Tutor support. Materials can be borrowed for the first few sessions. The first session is free, then £4 per session (includes refreshments).

GET TOGETHER CLUB (SEATED’ EXERCISE CLASS) – Every Thursday, 10.30-11.30am at the YMCA, Reforne, Portland. Gentle exercise to improve fitness, strengthen joints, increase inner core strength, keep you moving and improve stability to prevent falls. Tutor led. The first session is free, then £4.00 per session (includes refreshments). Transport available at £3.00 return.

OSTEOCISE EXERCISE CLASS – Every Monday, 10-11am at the Girt Hall, St Georges Centre, Reforne. Features seated and standing exercises, stretching, stamina and core strengthening work. Ideal for joint problems, including arthritis and osteoporosis. Supports weight loss. Helps maintain and improve mobility. Tutor led. The first session is free, then £4.00 per session (includes refreshments).

FIT+ EXERCISE CLASS – Every Wednesday, 11.30am-12.30pm at the YMCA, Reforne. Tutor led. Features cardio and core muscle strengthening exercises with a ‘hint of disco-ball.’ The first session is free, then £4.00 per session (includes refreshments).

THE COMMUNITY CROONERS – Every Tuesday, 10.00-11.30am in the Girt Hall, St Georges Centre, Reforne. A community choir for the over 50s. Suitable for those who enjoy learning harmonies, singing fun and light hearted songs and taking part in public performances. New members always welcome. The first session is free, then £4.00 per session (includes refreshments).

THE FORGET-ME-NOT SONGSTERS (DEMENTIA FRIENDLY) – If you watched the BBC’s Dementia Choir series and thought you, a loved one or a friend might benefit from something similar, why not come along to the next Forget-Me-Not Songsters session.

This warm and welcoming community-based singing group features activities and songs carefully chosen to keep the mind stimulated. It is open to all and great for anyone with concerns about their memory.

The group runs every other Wednesday and this month’s session is on the 18th December, 10.00-11.30am at the C2000 Hall, Easton. The first is session free, then £4 per session (includes refreshments).

COMMUNITY CARS and MINIBUS (wheelchair friendly) – Cars are available for appointments and shopping trips (advanced booking essential). The service operates on donations with volunteer drivers.

SHOPPING SERVICE FOR PORTLAND’S OVER 55s – ICA runs a regular Thursday and Friday mornings shopping service to Tesco, Easton. The cost is £3.00 return. Call ICA to book.

BEFRIENDING – ICA offers a range of befriending services, from companionship to help with errands, personal correspondence or perhaps just a friendly phone call or chat over a cup of tea. All our volunteers are police (DBS) and reference checked, interviewed and fully insured.

GARDENING – We are able to offer help with gardening, including mowing, weeding, planting and hedge trimming, basic landscaping. This is not a free service.
