***Tender For Three Beach Huts***

ICA are working with Atlantic Academy to create a wildlife garden for primary and secondary students. The garden will include beach, sensory, meadow, growing and outdoor classroom areas, along with a mini-amphitheater – see the overall garden plan below.

Once complete, the garden will be used for fun and educational activities, not only helping to increase student’s understanding, love and respect for nature and growing, but also providing space for discovery, creativity and exhibition.

The space will also be used to create activities for the wider community and youth-based groups across the Island, from bug hunts and willow weaving to performance and storytelling.

COVID-19 has delayed the project, but we’re now able to restart. Our first focus is the beach area. We’ve laid the foundation and now need to create the beach huts. These are bespoke builds, so we’re putting a call out for tradesmen to take on this work – see our very basic draft plan for huts below. We do have a budget…though not huge as this is a community-based project.

Perhaps you are a builder or carpenter with children or grand children at the school? Maybe you are passionate about providing our Island’s young people with more opportunities to learn about and experience nature. Or perhaps you’re looking for your next build job? Whatever your position, if you are interested in finding out more we’d love to hear from you.

We are also looking for sponsors for all three huts. Sponsors will get recognition through a permanent plaque and PR and marketing.

In addition, if you have the skills or time to help with other elements of the garden, please get in touch.

Say Cheese…

Over the next few days many of you will be out and about celebrating the Platinum Jubilee.

We’d love to see photos of all the things you get up to on the Souvenirs of Place and Love page, not just to capture the fun, energy and emotion of the weekend but also to provide a lasting local snapshot of this awesome, once-in-a-lifetime, celebration.

Our intention is to select some of these images to be transferred onto our special Jubilee ceramics, which will become part of the 2022 b-side Festival (before being handed back to you).

NB: For quality purposes any photos selected need to be 5MB or over. Of course, that doesn’t stop you from posting others too.

Souvenirs of Place and Love is a collaboration between Island Community Action – ICA and b-side, funded by the Arts Council England’s Let’s Create Jubilee Fund through the Dorset Community Foundation.

Platinum Jubilee Cream Tea

What a fantastic afternoon it was as we celebrated the Platinum Jubilee with a fantastic cream tea for our wonderful older clients.

Huge thanks to all those who volunteered at the event, baked cakes, made sandwiches and donated raffle prizes, including The Lobster Pot, Portland Bill, who donated all of the scones, and St. George’s Primary School whose wonderful students created special Jubilee placemats for all those who attended.

As always, you are all amazing.
